Supporting Dignity and Connection Through COTS’ Christmas on the Streets

The Frank Montagnese Foundation recently supported COTS’ Christmas on the Streets, an annual initiative that brings people together on Christmas Day to share food, conversation and connection with those experiencing homelessness or isolation.

For many, Christmas is a time of celebration and togetherness. For others, it can be one of the most challenging days of the year. Feelings of loneliness, grief, mental health struggles and social exclusion are often heightened during the holiday period, particularly for people without stable housing or strong support networks.

Christmas on the Streets exists to ensure no one feels forgotten.

Meeting people where they are

COTS has a long-standing presence within the community, walking alongside people experiencing homelessness through regular street runs and outreach. Their work is grounded in trust, consistency and human connection.

Christmas on the Streets reflects this approach. Rather than focusing solely on material support, the day centres on shared moments, conversation and inclusion. It creates space for people to feel seen, heard and valued, even during a time of year that can otherwise reinforce isolation.

This approach aligns closely with the Foundation’s belief that dignity must sit at the heart of any meaningful support.

The importance of connection

While access to food and practical assistance is vital, connection plays an equally important role in wellbeing. A shared meal, a conversation in the park, or simply being welcomed without judgement can make a significant difference to someone’s sense of belonging.

COTS’ work highlights that support does not always come in the form of solutions. Sometimes it begins with presence, respect and the willingness to walk alongside someone through difficult circumstances.

Backing frontline compassion

The Frank Montagnese Foundation focuses on supporting organisations that are embedded in their communities and trusted to deliver care with empathy and integrity. COTS exemplifies this through its year-round street runs and its commitment to showing up, particularly when demand is highest.

By supporting Christmas on the Streets, the Foundation backed an initiative that recognises the complexity of homelessness and responds with humanity rather than assumption.

Walking together

One of the most powerful reminders to come from COTS’ street work is that hardship does not define a person. Messages of hope, resilience and kindness often come from those facing the greatest challenges.

Christmas on the Streets reflects a simple truth: while circumstances differ, everyone deserves dignity, connection and compassion.

The Frank Montagnese Foundation acknowledges COTS, its volunteers and its community for the care they continue to show, on Christmas Day and beyond.
